A considered transformation of a coastal Newport residence, bringing architecture, construction and interiors together to create a home that feels both refined and deeply connected to the way it will be lived. The design balances the character of the existing home with a contemporary approach to materiality, proportion and detail. Existing sandstone, timber flooring and architectural elements are retained and carefully integrated alongside new finishes, joinery and bespoke detailing, allowing the original character of the residence to remain an important part of its identity. Across the ground and first floors, the spaces have been reimagined with a focus on flow, functionality and natural light. Raised window heads increase the sense of openness, while raked ceilings and carefully resolved transitions create a feeling of volume throughout the principal living spaces. In the winter room, existing sandstone is being thoughtfully adapted with a new timber mantle and considered joinery, while the kitchen introduces softer curves to balance the structure and geometry of the existing architecture. Material selection is deliberately restrained yet tactile. Natural stone, timber tones, pale green accents, refined joinery and carefully selected wall finishes create a warm, layered palette that sits comfortably within the coastal setting. In the entry, the clients explored a more expressive Palladiana-style stone finish, extending from the foyer onto the external patio to create a seamless transition between inside and out. Every detail has been considered alongside the realities of construction. From resolving roof structure and bulkheads to integrating air-conditioning, services, storage and practical elements within the joinery, the design process remains closely connected to how the home will ultimately function. As a Design + Construct project, Newport reflects INTERLOCK.'s unified approach — where architectural intent and construction knowledge move together from the earliest decisions through to delivery. The result is a home shaped by considered design, practical resolution and craftsmanship, with every element working towards a cohesive and enduring whole.
